Bournemouth University Shipwrex project

Wednesday 16th July 2014

Bournemouth University is currently working together with the Ancient Technology Centre, Dorset on an exciting new project, centred around ancient workman and craftsmanship skills used by Mediterranean Iron Age boat builders. A vast array of specialists are working together to look at the technologies involved and to re-construct a 5th Century BC boat. Months of effort are hoping to have the first section of the boat completed by June 2014.

Experimental archaeology, such as this, is extremely important to our understanding of the past and to experience the pros and cons of different construction techniques. Without trying to work at these traditional building styles first hand, we can not fully look into the past world of craftsmanship and builders of their time.

Furthermore, to meet the team involved and learn about this project, the Shipwrex project will be at Bournemouth University’s Festival of Learning on the 11th and 12th of June. More information about the Shipwrex events at the Festival of Learning can be found here.
